Chapter 17

Asher came to when something cool, refreshing, and wet splashed against his snout. At first, he thought maybe it was just a dream, and he squeezed his eyes shut, trying to preserve what few remnants of peaceful slumber he could.

Then he remembered that he hadn’t been asleep, and bolted upright. He panted as his heart pounded against his chest, looking around frantically for the source of the errant wetness. He found it not too far away. Kowalski knelt beside him, a half-full cup of water in his hand.

Asher didn’t even bother asking, he took the cup from the officer’s hands and held it up to his lips, gulping back the cool, refreshing fluid. The water felt miraculous against his dry throat and cracked, saurian lips. He gasped in relief when he was done, and met Kowalski’s gaze to ask for more.

That was when he noticed the detective was scowling at him. Asher blinked in surprise, looking from the cup, to the cop, and back again. “Were you drinking that?” he asked, holding the cup out to the officer. “Sorry.”

Kowalski took the cup and rose to his feet. As he did, Asher could see the barely conscious form of his dragon, sprawled out on the floor behind him. His eyes widened, and his mind raced with horror. “For the headache,” Kowalski grunted.

Asher didn’t know how Kowalski knew of his headache, but he didn’t complain. He popped the pills into his mouth, then chased them with a gulp of water, sighing in relief. His head still felt like there were hammers pounding against it, but all would be better in another thirty minutes or so.

Asher handed the cup back to Kowalski, who again stood up and walked away. Asher blinked and tried not to look at his dragon, trying instead to focus on his surroundings. He was still in Stone’s apartment, which was good; it meant nobody else had likely seen Esther.

“How did you find me?” Asher grumbled, debating whether it was worth it to try and push himself up to a standing position. Maybe sitting was more feasible? With a wince of pain, he slowly crossed his legs and leaned forward, resting his chin on his fists. He blinked in surprise. Hadn’t his wrist been broken or something?

He checked his left wrist, and sure enough, the swelling had died down. It still hurt when he touched it, but it wasn’t nearly as bad off as he had initially assumed. Likely it was just bruised, maybe a fracture at worst.

“I dunno,
